The Met Office has issued a 10-hour “danger to life” storm warning for Yorkshire

The Met Office has issued a ten-hour thunderstorm warning for Yorkshire.

After a spell of warm and sunny weather, the Met Office now predicts it will end with heavy showers, thunderstorms which could disrupt travel and lead to some flooding. They said there was a small chance fast-flowing water or deep flooding could cause life-threatening conditions, especially in places like road and railway underpasses.




The warning is in effect from noon Sunday until 10 p.m. Temperatures on Friday and Saturday are expected to reach 22C in parts of Yorkshire on Friday, Saturday and Sunday before the storms hit.

In its warning for Yorkshire, the Met Office said: “Heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to break out in the south of this area late Sunday morning and early Sunday afternoon, moving steadily northwards as they build into larger areas of rain before cleaning the area.

“Some heavy showers are possible in a few places, giving up to 30mm in less than an hour and perhaps 40-50mm in 2 to 3 hours leading to surface water flooding. Hail, frequent lightning and strong wind gusts will additionally be located. dangers.”

They say anyone in the area should expect the following:

  • Spraying and flash flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • Where there is flooding or lightning, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations of train and bus services
  • There is a small chance that power outages will occur and other services to some homes and businesses will be lost
  • There is a small chance that fast-flowing water or deep flooding could be life-threatening, especially in places like road and railway underpasses.
  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses will be flooded quickly, with some buildings damaged by floodwaters, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.

They are advising people to check if they are at risk of flash flooding which affected roads and rail routes in Bradford and Leeds over the bank holiday. They also suggest that if you hear thunder, you should find an enclosed and safe place to shelter.
