Leeds United are said to be weighing up a move to re-sign Connor Roberts from Burnley in the summer, with uncertainty reigning at Turf Moor following Vincent Kompany’s exit.

Promotion back to the Premier League remains the goal for Leeds coming into the 24/25 season, their second campaign in a row in the Championship.

For Daniel Farke, he will need to use the transfer window to address the balance of his squad and react to the end of loan deals which have left gaps in his squad, particularly in the back four.

Leeds are interested in re-signing Connor Roberts from Burnley

The play-off final defeat was the last game of Roberts’ loan spell with Leeds, confirmed on the retained list as returning to Burnley.

Meanwhile, the Clarets return to the Championship after a poor attempt to stay in the top flight under Vincent Kompany, who jumped ship from Turf Moor to take a job at Bayern Munich.

Following this, The Athletic said the Whites are keen for the Welshman to return to Elland Road with 12 months remaining on his Burnley contract as things stand:

“Roberts, another Wales defender, has a year left on his contract at Burnley, who return to the second tier for next season. The 28-year-old full-back’s future could depend on who fills the vacant manager’s job at Turf Moor following the appointment of Vincent Kompany to Bayern Munich.

“After losing his place in Kompany’s starting XI last October, Roberts opened the door to a winter move. He spent the second half of the season on loan at Elland Road, making 15 appearances, limited by a thigh injury sustained on international duty in March.

“Between relegation and Kompany leaving, things are in a state of flux at Burnley, which is likely to affect any chance of a return to Leeds. Kompany’s former assistant Craig Bellamy has been appointed interim head coach and interviews for a permanent successor are set to begin this week. Former Hull City manager Liam Rosenior, former Chelsea and Derby boss Frank Lampard and former Fulham and Bournemouth manager Scott Parker are among those being considered.

“Leeds will be eyeing another deal for Roberts but he is assessing his options.”

Will Leeds be promoted next season?

Leeds would be making a mistake chasing Roberts hard

Leeds are in need of a right back or two in the summer window and retaining Sam Byram is a good start to address any potential lack of depth.

Roberts would be another easy way to add another body to the team that can work quite well at right back.

However, there has been very little from Roberts that we have seen in half a season that would justify him being the signing for us.

His only two standout performances that really impressed him were his secondary appearances against Leicester City and Huddersfield Town – the latter game against 10 men who were subsequently relegated, so not worth highlighting an opposition.

Outside of those games, there has been little in the way of outings on the wing, with Junior Firpo being a consistent option in the final third at the other end.

Defensively, he hasn’t been totally solid either, perhaps helped by that aforementioned hamstring issue from March.

Turning 29 in September, Farke could be seen as a solid addition for experience, but Leeds could really do with someone more athletic and effective in possession.

Often in 23/24 our right channel was an attacking dead zone which meant we channeled our play to Crysencio Summerville constantly, to change that you need a natural right back who can get forward at will.

Max Aarons could have been that signing, Roberts wouldn’t be that signing for us. There are certainly worse players to sign, but there are also better players to sign.
