Body found in Plymouth woods

Emergency services were called to woodland off Leigham Manor Drive this morning after a member of the public made the grim discovery.

Police confirmed that shortly after 10am, a member of the public out walking found the body of a man in his 60s. Members of the public are understood to have tried to help the man. When police arrived they called for assistance from both South Western Ambulance Services and Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service due to the difficult location of the body on a steep bank next to the River Plym.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Due to the position of the body, fire crews used a raft to cross the water to shore where they were able to place it on a stretcher and recover the body.

“Police have placed a large cordon around the area and inquiries have been made to establish if there was any third party involvement. During this time the public, including dog walkers, have been asked to keep a respectful distance.

“After examining the area, police determined that the circumstances of the man’s death were not suspicious. His next of kin have been informed. We can confirm the man was 61 years old and from Plymouth.

“A file will now be prepared for the coroner to carry out an inquest at a later date.”
