Ideal £20m signing looms if trio are deemed missing but Leicester City won’t solve Newcastle’s problem

The transfer window may only have officially opened, but rumors have been swirling for weeks.

That’s even at Leicester City, where financial regulation concerns mean they won’t be splashing the cash this summer. However, offers will have to be made at some point to prepare them for their bid for Premier League survival.

Here, we’ve taken three of City’s latest transfer rumors and looked at them a little more closely to see if there’s any legitimacy to them. You can tell us your thoughts in the comments section at the bottom of the page.

Tammy Abraham

Reports in Italy say City are one of the clubs tracking Abraham as Roma prepare to part ways with the England striker. He is fit again after recovering from a torn ACL but has found himself out of favor since returning to fitness, with Daniele De Rossi now in the dugout rather than Jose Mourinho.

Abraham made a brilliant start to life in the Italian capital, scoring 27 goals in his first campaign there, including the winner against City in the semi-finals of the Europa Conference League clubs. He scored nine times in his second season at the Stadio Olimpico and just once in an injury-ravaged campaign last season.

Other reports from the Telegraph say Abraham could be available for around £20million, with a move back to the Premier League possible. Tottenham, West Ham and Aston Villa are named as sides who could be interested.

LeicestershireLive’s Jordan Blackwell says: Firstly, City have the quantity, but do they have the quality? That’s a question they need to ask themselves this summer.

Even with Kelechi Iheanacho leaving on a free transfer, City have enough options up front for the new manager to work with. Very few bosses play with two up front these days, so a trio of strikers is definitely enough.

But those options at the moment are a 37-year-old Jamie Vardy, a successful Patson Daka and an inexperienced Tom Cannon. Whether any of the trio is good enough to spearhead City’s bid for survival will have to be seen.

A consistent top-flight player feels essential to staying afloat and so, even on City’s limited budget, a new striker can be a smart move. And Abraham feels like an ideal signing.

He has pace, he has height, he has the talent to score. At 26, he is at an old age. He has Premier League experience but will have developed during his time with Roma and would return to England keen to prove he should be in the same conversations as Ollie Watkins, Ivan Toney and Dominic Solanke as front three options lei. .

In this case, £20m is pretty cheap. If City decide a new striker is needed, Abraham looks like a potentially brilliant option. Being able to promise him a main striker role means City may even look like an attractive option for Abraham, even if the likes of Spurs and Villa are keen.

Mathias Soule

Several reports in Italy have suggested that City and West Ham have held talks with Juventus winger Soule’s representative. The Italian giants are said to be happy for him to leave for the right price this summer to help fund their deal, with a figure of at least €40m (£33.7m) desired.

Picked up by Juventus from Velez Sarsfield in his native Argentina, Soule made a handful of appearances for the Bianconeri but really hit his stride last season on loan at Frosinone. Despite the club being relegated from Serie A, 21-year-old Soule managed 11 goals from the right flank to finish top scorer.

LeicestershireLive’s Jordan Blackwell says: City won’t sign anyone for that price this summer, never mind a player in an area where they are already strengthening. Soule looks like he has a promising future in the game, but his best position is out wide on the right wing and City will bring in Abdul Fatawu in that role for almost £20m less.

In an ideal world, City could probably do with a new face to provide competition. But with Fatawu on one side, Stephy Mavididi on the other and the likes of Kasey McAteer, Wanya Marcal and maybe even Will Alves operating there, it won’t be something they’re desperate for this summer.

Sean Longstaff

City are said to be planning a £15million swoop for the Newcastle midfielder. According to The Mirror, City have been keeping an eye on Longstaff for several months and are now said to be ready to turn that interest into something more concrete.

Although the 26-year-old started 30 of Newcastle’s 38 Premier League games last season and is clearly liked by Eddie Howe, it seems they are willing to sell. As an academy graduate, he is valuable when it comes to profit and sustainability rules (PSR) and it is reported that City could help “resolve” Newcastle’s concerns in this regard.

LeicestershireLive’s Jordan Blackwell says: City are in no position to solve any other club’s PSR problems. They have them to deal with first. That means transfers received before the June 30 cut-off points are extremely unlikely.

Even beyond that, there would be doubts as to whether Longstaff is the kind of midfielder City need. They certainly need to strengthen in this area, but what they need are forward options.

Longstaff scored eight times in all competitions last season. That’s a decent number, and it looks like it’s an area where it’s improving. But while the ability to contribute goals is a good attribute, Longstaff doesn’t seem to have the carrying and passing qualities that City would from a forward-thinking midfield option.
