Wigan Warriors CEO names dark horses for Super League clash

Wigan Warriors chief executive Kris Radlinski has tipped off the squad he believes will make a late entry into the Super League play-offs, selecting neighbors Leigh Leopards as dark horses for the top six.

Leigh Leopards are currently in ninth place with nine points from twelve games, seven points adrift of the play-off places. Adrian Lam’s side have a game in hand, having not played in the second round, as Kris Radlinski’s Wigan side take part in the World Club Challenge.

That fixture has now been rearranged and will take place in early August between rounds 21 and 22, as Super League announced earlier this week, meaning Leigh will be forced to play three games in ten days.

It will likely be a must-win game for Leigh, with the outside club looking in and likely to need ten or more wins from their remaining fifteen to reach the play-offs, however, Kris Radlinski has backed them to do so.

Speaking on The Sportsman Youtube channel, Radlinski commented on the state of Super League in 2024 before making the bold prediction that Leigh will be the dark horse to finish in the top six.

He said: “It’s really tight at the top. You just talked about the Catalans and Leigh and Leigh haven’t been far all season. They lost a few games by a few points, get a few players back.

“I almost think if I were Adrian Lam, I know he’s committed to his future, I’m going to say, ‘Let’s finish this little period of our success together,’ and generate that spirit within the group.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Leigh turn the Catalans at the weekend and they have a very good job in the play-offs. I’m not far, guys.”

Leigh traveled to Perpignan earlier in the week and were boosted by the return of Gaz O’Brien as well as Matty Davis for the clash. They will be looking to bounce back from defeat against Hull KR, while Steve McNamara’s side will be looking to return to form after losing four of their last five.

Former SKy Sports pundit Eddie Hemmings was not as positive as Radlinski about Leigh Leopards’ prospects, noting the club’s record number of fans.

Hemmings said: “They’ll have a great time but you’d still support the Catalans at home, even against Leigh with 1,500 fans.”
