Sheffield Wednesday target ‘completes medical’ ahead of free transfer

A Sheffield Wednesday transfer target has ‘completed his medical’ ahead of a free transfer to Hillsborough.

Sheffield Wednesday got the first sign of the summer over the line on Friday, announcing the arrival of Ben Hamer on a free transfer.

The experienced goalkeeper becomes Sheffield Wednesday’s first signing of the summer and manager Danny Rohl’s first permanent signing since taking charge in October.

It caps a strong start to pre-season, which began with owner Dejphon Chansiri agreeing a new three-year deal for Rohl.

With Hamer now official, Rohl will be hoping to get offers for some of Sheffield Wednesday’s other reported transfer targets over the line.

Several names have been linked with summer moves to Hillsborough. Ovie Ejaria and Karamoko Dembele are among the names mentioned, along with centre-back Charlie Goode.

Sheffield United left-back Max Lowe has also been linked; he is set to leave the Blades as a free agent this summer and has now been revealed to have completed a medical with the Owls.

Max Lowe completes Sheffield Wednesday medical ahead of Sheffield United exit

Lowe, 27, is being released by Sheffield United at the end of his contract on June 30 after an injury-plagued four-year spell at Bramall Lane.

Following his 2020 move from Derby County, Lowe managed just 53 first-team appearances for Sheffield United, eight of which came in the Premier League last season.

But in those 53 games, Lowe has nine assists, five of which came in 26 league appearances during United’s promotion-winning 2022/23 campaign.

Posting on X, journalist Miller revealed on Friday that Lowe is now “ready to become” a Sheffield Wednesday player after completing his medical.

The signing of Max Lowe at Sheffield Wednesday suggests two things

Lowe’s arrival at Sheffield Wednesday may be a sign of things to come this summer, with the Owls clearly set to scout the free agent market.

There are some gems to be had on the free agent market and Lowe could be one; despite his injuries, his assist tally shows he is a very creative left back and will give Marvin Johnson good competition and cover next time.

Lowe’s signing also shows that Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday could be ready to poach a few players from neighboring teams, regardless of rivalries.

Location can often play a deciding factor in a footballer’s next moves and that may have been the case for Lowe.

Rotherham United, Huddersfield Town, Barnsley and of course Sheffield United could all have some good players set to leave this summer and Sheffield Wednesday could well find some strong signings among them.
