Ryan Hall reflects after breaking the Super League try record

Hull KR star Ryan Hall has revealed he hung out with Danny McGuire yesterday morning – hours before he broke his former Leeds team-mate’s Super League try-scoring record.

The England winger grabbed a late brace in Rovers’ 32-6 win over Huddersfield last night to firstly match McGuire’s tally of 247 tries, then surpass it amid jubilant scenes at Craven Park. Hall, 36, was asked if McGuire – who won six Grand Finals alongside him in Leeds colors – had discussed the record much with him. He replied, “Actually, I saw him today.

“We went for coffee and he mentioned everything tongue in cheek. It’s never serious. He said I was bound to score tonight but I wasn’t sure as I haven’t touched the ball much in recent weeks! But it’s good to get it done. And it’s like buses…none come in six weeks and then two come!”

Hall, who has scored 58 tries in 93 games for KR since joining KR from the Sydney Roosters in 2021, has been locked on 246 Super League tries since May 4 and has not gone over in any of his last four exits. He admitted: “I’m very pleased because it’s a monkey off my back. I tried not to make a big deal, but everyone jumped on me. The crowd paid their respects which was really nice and it was good to do it at home and do it.”

Hall, who has scored 233 tries in 330 games in all competitions for hometown Leeds and rejoins them in 2025, claimed he didn’t think much of the record. He said: “Only when other people force me through social media. Sky got in touch a week before the game at Warrington on Wednesday asking what kind of videos I wanted to play when I scored.

“I’m not going out there thinking I’m going to score this week; is to do things for the team, and if opportunities arise, I will do my best to score. It set me back a bit and it took me a while to get back. I’m finally done tonight.”

Of the favorite for his 248 Super League tries, he added: “They’re a couple. (Ex-Leeds boss) Brian McClennan sent me a ‘well done’ video message and mentioned the try in the Grand Final in 2008. It was a bit out of character – I kicked the ball – but it was a meaningful first try : an attempt in a final. That marked me in my career.

“I was number 22 in the team back then and the next year I had five and I’ve had five since then so that was significant. But obviously Huddersfield were trying in 2015 to get the Leaders’ Shield, and that was up there.”
