Kieran Trippier explains why he didn’t end up at Manchester City

Kieran Trippier has reflected on his time at Manchester City and why he failed at the club.

The right-back began his career in City’s youth ranks before eventually joining Burnley on a permanent move back in the January 2012 transfer window.

Prior to the move, the defender had two loan spells with Barnsley and one with Burnley before joining the Clarets on a permanent basis.

In a City shirt, Trippier made a combined 15 appearances for the Manchester club’s U18 and U21 sides, but never played in a senior game for the Blues.

At the age of 33, the Englishman has now shared his thoughts on this early stage of his career and why he never quite made it at the Etihad Stadium.

Opening up to Gary Neville on a recent edition of The Overlap, Trippier had this to say about his time at City.

He said: “I think I look at my career and I wouldn’t change a thing.

“I think when I was there you had (Pablo) Zabaleta who was one of the best right-backs for many years and obviously Micah (Richards) was there too.”

“And then I went through the transition where they just got taken over and started buying loads of players and I had to go out and play.

“I was at Barnsley and when I came back I experienced that and I think there’s no shame in giving up a league.

“It was difficult for me at Man City at the time because I was never going to play and (I) played against the men in the Championship and then I signed for Burnley.”

Trippier went on to have a solid career after City’s disappointment

Since leaving City, the Newcastle United captain has gone on to play for clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid, where they became La Liga champions in the 2020/21 season, before returning to England and joining the current squad.

After racking up 36 Champions League appearances and becoming a regular in England’s senior squad, there is no doubt that the former City youngster has gone on to have a solid career at the highest level since taking his farewell to the Blues.

With all that in mind, we think Trippier, who recently said he was a huge admirer of what Kyle Walker did during his time with the Citizens, made the right decision in leaving City to get more game time and progress. Career.
