Player ratings as Wigan Warriors almost beat Castleford Tigers in controversial circumstances – Total Rugby League

WIGAN WARRIORS did enough to record a 10-8 win over Castleford Tigers in controversial circumstances.

Wigan started the brighter of the two sides, Liam Marshall heading in the corner following great hands from Jake Wardle. Harry Smith could not convert as Warriors led 4-0 after seven minutes.

There really wasn’t much to shout about from either side in the opening 40 minutes, although Sylvster Namo’s bulldozing run had the home fans on their feet.

That was until Hoy sliced through the Wigan defense like a knife through butter six minutes before the break before audaciously letting the Frenchman over the line. Rowan Milnes could not convert with the scores locked at 4-4.

In typical Castleford fashion this season, a loose ball from Milnes put more pressure on Wigan as the half-time hooter approached, but this time Craig Lingard’s side held firm.

FOR RUM: CASTLEFORD TIGERS 4-4 WIGAN WARRIORS

The Tigers held on in the 51st minute when Milnes scored a penalty after Wigan were found offside.

The home side were harshly sent down to 12 men when Cain Robb was brought down for a hard tackle on Abbas Miski, but even then the Warriors could not breach the home side’s line.

Instead, Milnes added two more points from the boot when Wigan were found guilty of a high tackle.

8-4 down, Matt Peet’s side equalized with a lucky rebound after a brilliant break by France. From that tackle Wardle offloaded inside and Milnes put the ball into the hands of Marshall who couldn’t help but score.

Smith missed that conversion but the midfielder put Wigan in front moments later after Luke Thompson’s line-splitting run ended with a late on-ball tackle.

Castleford kept coming but a Nixon Putt hit with six minutes remaining and the Jungle crowd went wild – and the players seemed to feed off that.

However, it took another controversial decision to put the final nail in the Tigers’ coffin.

Zach Eckersley was caught on the last tackle, with Thaler wanting to let the play continue until Walters entered the game. The video referee let Chris Kendall inform Thaler of a penalty in favor of Wigan.

And the Tigers just couldn’t claw their way back towards the end.
