Bristol Rovers in talks with Championship goalkeeper

Bristol Rovers are in talks to sign Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Cameron Dawson, according to a report from The Sheffield Wednesday News.

Dawson represented the Owls 129 occasions since making his debut in 2016 and has also spent time on loan with the likes of Exeter City and Alfreton Town.

The 28-year-old was never able to make his number one spot at Hillsborough, having to battle with the likes of David Stockdale for a starting spot during his time at the club.

However, he helped the club regain Championship status in 2023. Dawson played 22 times in the league and in all three playoff games, keeping a total of 14 clean sheets.

Last season, he lost his place in the starting eleven to James Beadle, on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion. Reports suggest Beadle is back on manager Danny Rohl’s shopping list and the club have already added an experienced shot-stopper. Ben Hamer to their ranks.

Dawson now looks ready to go Wednesday after rejecting the offer of a new contract and interest his former manager Matt Taylor at Bristol Rovers.

The pair worked together during Dawson’s loan spell with the Grecians in the 2021-22 campaign, one in which the club won promotion to the third tier.

The England Under 19 stopper has played 45 times for Exeter The second leaguehe conceded just 40 goals and kept 18 clean sheets.

Taylor is looking to improve on last season’s 15th place finish and currently has a very inexperienced goalkeeping department in Matt Hall and 21-year-old Jed Ward.

The writer’s vision

The move makes sense for Dawson, as it’s likely he would have been the backup goaltender again on Wednesday.

Joining a manager who has shown faith in him before will give him an excellent chance to play consistently and establish himself as the number one.

Bristol Rovers will be hoping Dawson can show Championship quality to help improve on a slightly lackluster season last time out.
