Max Lowe gets Sheffield United and Wednesday fans talking after making rare Blades-Owls switch

Max Lowe has Sheffield United and Wednesday fans talking after making a rare Blades-Owls switch in this summer transfer window.

Sheffield Wednesday have completed the signing of Max Lowe from local rivals Sheffield United on a free transfer.

Lowe’s contract with Sheffield United is set to expire on July 1, and he will then officially become a Sheffield Wednesday player, meaning he will face his old club in the Championship for the 2024/25 season.

This transfer is notable for being a rare direct move between the two clubs, the last being Caolan Lavery in 2016.

Reaction from Sheffield Wednesday fans has been mixed, with some happy that Lowe is signing for them, while others have expressed concern about his injury history and performance on the pitch.

The club said in a statement: Max Lowe has agreed to sign a deal on Wednesday, July 1.

Lowe is a versatile performer, equally at home in the left back berth or as a holding midfielder.

He began his career with Derby, graduating from the Rams’ academy and making 42 senior appearances.

Loan spells with Shrewsbury and Aberdeen followed before a permanent move to our city rivals Sheffield United.

Lowe went on to make 44 appearances for the Blades, including a temporary move to Nottingham Forest, where he was part of the Reds’ side that won promotion to the Premier League via the 2021/22 play-offs.

The 27-year-old is a decorated England international at the younger age groups, having represented the Three Lions at under-16, 17, 18 and 20 level.

Lowe will put pen to paper at Hillsborough in July when his current contract expires.

Welcome Wednesday, Max!
