Man is fighting for his life after being hit by car while standing on footpath

A man who was hit by a car while standing on a footpath is fighting for his life in hospital. The accident happened yesterday evening (Friday) in Ashton-in-Makerfield, near Wigan, just after 5pm.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said a silver Skoda Karoq was traveling eastbound along Wigan Road from the junction with Bryn Road when it “crossed the center line, entering the westbound carriageway before colliding with a pedestrian “.

A 50-year-old man from Wigan was hit “while standing on a footpath outside a business”, they said. He was rushed to hospital with serious injuries. He remains in a critical condition, the force said in a statement issued this evening (Saturday).

No other cars were involved and no other injuries were reported. The accident is being investigated by the force’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU).

They are asking anyone who may have witnessed it to come forward. They are also “keen to speak to anyone who may have footage, including CCTV, dashcam or mobile phone footage of the area in the moments leading up to the collision”, GMP said.
