Birmingham Metro Flood Advisory: Alabama Weather Blog

Rainfall rates between 1-2 inches per hour are falling across the southern and western half of the Birmingham metro area.

An approaching runoff boundary is bound to bring an additional boost to storms in the same areas as there are weak steering currents.

Heavy rain is now falling from the Dolomites to Fairfield, Brighton and Midfield, in areas west of I-65 including Powderly, Oxmoor and West End. Heavy rain in Smithfield through much of Birmingham city to Avondale.

It now flows between Cahaba Heights and Mountain Brook. Areas for Homewood south through the Vestavia Hills also receive heavy rain.

Most of the lightning is over western Jefferson County, but there were some strong strikes and thunder along the 280 Corridor from Inverness and Meadowbrook to Altadena Road.

Now, the Weather Service has issued a flood advisory for much of Jefferson County, bounded by Short Creek and Forestdale, Tarrant, Irondale, the Cahaba River, Bessemer and Rock Creek.
