Beer drinkers in England were given new street drinking rules in June and July

England fans will embrace German tradition by sinking pints of Euros in corner shops as locals demand shops stay open late. England fans celebrating Euro 2024 – with the first game against Serbia tonight at 8pm – have been given new guidance on street drinking.

German cities have shops – known as ‘Späti’ – where fans can buy drinks and then sit on picnic benches and consume them. German journalist Kai Feldhaus said: “I think it’s a very traditional thing. People would start buying things from corner shops, which are called ‘late shops’ or ‘Spätis’ in Berlin and West Germany, when the supermarkets closed.”

He told the Sun newspaper: “They wanted to buy the basics and then maybe have a drink. Then the supermarkets started opening late, but they survived. You can sit outside a bar, you can sit outside a pub – but you can also sit outside a corner shop.

“It’s a good place to have a quick beer because people come in and out, you meet people, it’s a really nice thing to do. Especially in Berlin it is very common. These are the best places. There was a huge discussion about corner shops being closed or late on Sundays and there was a lot of protest against it because it’s the easiest way to get a quick beer.

“Get it on the road to go somewhere, to the next location. I hope England fans will enjoy the corner shops and I’m pretty sure they will because England fans love their beer on the way to the game. So this is made for England Fans for the Euros”.

England take on the Serbians on Sunday evening before taking on Denmark and also Slovenia for a place in the last 16.
