Jon Wilkin says Hull FC and Salford-linked man not worth £180,000

Wests Tigers have sparked a battle in the Super League transfer market with news that some of their biggest names were available on cut-price deals. One of their players has been repeatedly linked with a move to Hull FC and Salford Red Devils.

According to reports in the Australian media, Wests chief executive Shane Flanagan has flown to the UK with a mandate to reduce their salary cap and offload a number of their top earners. Former Wigan Warriors player John Bateman has topped the list of available players and the England man is said to be open to a return to Super League.

Halfback Jayden Sullivan and utility back Brent Naden were other names reported to be available despite being under contract through 2025 and, in Sullivan’s case, beyond. Sullivan only joined the club in the off-season on a multi-year deal.

With the Tigers set to sign Samoan superstar Jarome Luai in the off-season, they need to offload players to balance the books, with Luai set to sign a five-year deal worth $6 million.

Now Sky Sports pundit Jon Wilkin has given his take on one of the Tigers’ available stars.

Speaking in the build-up to the Hull FC v Leeds Rhinos match, Wilkin gave his thoughts on Sullivan. Sullivan has been linked with a move to Super League in recent weeks, with Hull and Salford Red Devils reportedly in the market to sign him. However, his agent recently distanced Sullivan from the rumors.

Wilkin does not believe Sullivan offers value to clubs given the level of salary he would command. According to Wilkin, Sullivan is not much compared to some of the overseas stars who would have made a similar salary in the past.

“But I think one of the big challenges is that when you’re at a club like Hull, which isn’t doing so well at the moment, it’s because of the commercial side of the NRL, Hull have to pay over the odds for players who really I just wouldn’t have cut it a few years ago.

“And you have to pay an exorbitant amount of your salary cap to people you’re still not sure will do the job for you.

“An example would be Shane Richardson was here offloading players from West Tigers who are rumored to be offering Jayden Sullivan 180,000 a year. Now in a salary cap sport, he has played 35 NRL games.

“You know when I played for St. Helens, Richie Barnett was playing for all FC, Stephen Kearney was playing for all FC, you know Marc O’Meley, Craig Fitzgibbon, Jason Smith.

“Now, if we want to talk about the gradual change in our competition and clubs like Hull and Leeds, look at the quality of those goalscorers and the value you get from them.”
