Woman’s sunglasses warn after she loses her eyeball

A TikTok user has shared a harrowing story of how he lost an eye after his sunglasses broke during a car accident.

Hannah Oliver posted a video that has since gone viral with more than 1.8 million views, detailing the traumatic event and warning others.

In her cautionary tale, she said: “I lost my eye to breaking sunglasses and let me tell you, this is something you probably do all the time.” She said it happened while she was driving with her “favorite sunglasses” on a sunny day.

She continued with a warning about the dangers of plastic lenses: “The problem is that most of the sunglasses you probably wear are made of straight plastic lenses. And basically what that means is on whatever impact they’re going to break.”

Hannah then recounted the moment of the collision. She said: “So I was driving and this guy pulled out in front of me, I didn’t react fast enough and when I did I slammed on the brakes and rear-ended him… I was only doing 25 years. miles an hour.”

The impact triggered his airbag, which then hit his sunglasses. She said: “When it happened my airbag went off and it hit my sunglasses squarely.

“The lens broke into pieces and all those pieces went straight into my eye.” She then detailed the extent of her injuries: “My eye was crushed, the optic nerve was gone, my retina was detached, my eye was completely deflated.

“My upper eyelid was drooping, the lower eyelid, as you can see, is really non-existent.” Hannah outlined how a nasty accident led to the creation of her own line of safety sunglasses, reports Wales Online.

She said: “The hardest thing for me after the accident was figuring out what was a safe pair of stylish sunglasses for me to wear.” Consequently, she launched her own brand, Blue Eye.

She said: “Because this happens all the time. Since losing my eye, I’ve connected with so many people who have lost their eye for the exact same reason.”

Directing advice to consumers, Hannah suggested they examine the material composition of any potential sunglass purchase. She said: “If they’re made of plastic or nylon and anything other than polycarbonate, don’t wear them in the car.

“Trust me, you don’t want to be partially blind or go through pain.”

Drivers may be at high risk when wearing non-break-resistant sunglasses while behind the wheel. Wearing shatter-resistant sunglasses reduces the risk of injury if a driver gets into an accident on the road.

Big fines for wearing the wrong sunglasses

The regulations risk drivers being fined up to £1,000 and three points on their license if they drive wearing the wrong glasses. Due to the fact that colored glasses and lenses result in restricted vision, you should never wear glasses that are too dark and you should never wear any form of sunglasses at night.

It is essential that drivers wear appropriate sunglasses and ensure they have a clear view of the road at all times. If the glasses are too dark to prevent drivers from seeing clearly, or make it difficult for you to see traffic signals clearly, then this can lead to a £1000 fine.

Wear sunglasses with UV protection

Many drivers are seen wearing fashionable sunglasses behind the wheel, however, if these lenses are simply tinted and do not block UV rays. This has a high potential to harm the driver.

You can check that your sunglasses meet the British Standards of 99-100% UV blocking by looking for the British and European Standard markings on the label. Fashionable sunglasses with deep side arms can also block your side or peripheral vision, so they are not recommended for driving.
