Shaw and Ede take Silver to Birmingham

British judo won three more medals on the second and final day of the European Junior Cup in Birmingham, taking our medal tally to nine for the event.

Summer Shaw and Daniel Ede both bagged silver medals in the -48kg and +100kg categories respectively, while Charlotte Jenman won bronze in the -57 kg category.

Shaw entered as the number one seed on the back of a silver medal at the European Junior Cup in Kaunas last month. The 2022 European Youth Olympic Festival bronze medalist won her group before beating Marta Beorlegui (ESP) to book her place in the final to face Fina-Pamedie Kaendi-Nzuzi (FRA).

With nothing between the pair and 90 seconds left in the contest, Shaw was pinned to the ground and pinned for a waza-ari score. In the next exchange, she was caught for another waza-ari score, giving the French judoka the victory. The result equaled Shaw’s career best on the European circuit.

In the +100 kg category, Ed secured his place in the final with wins over Mate Ramishvili (FRA) and Alejandro-Antonio Rojas-Arencibia (ESP) in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively.

Ede took on Matheo Akiana-Mongo (FRA) in the last event of the day, but when he went down with two shidos, when the referee awarded both judokas a shido a piece for not catching him, Ede had to settle for silver, which was an improvement on the bronze medal he took in 2023.

After taking -52kg gold in 2023, Jenman returned to her new weight class, -57kg in 2024. The former European Cadet Championship bronze medalist secured her place in the bronze medal contest via a play-off, defeating teammate Maddie Birri to hold another all-British contest against Chloe Linkwho is in his debut year in the junior age group.

The bronze medal contest was another tight affair that was settled by the shidos, when Link, who already had two to her name heading into the Gold Score, got a third, resulting in Jenman taking the bronze .

The result saw Link finish in 5thth place. There was also a 5th finishing place for James Weller-Henry (+100 kg) and 7th place finishes for beer and Zhaklin Satari (-57 kg), Cameron Hickey (-90kg) and Jake Mair(-100 kg).
