Erik ten Hag has revealed Manchester United ADMITTED holding talks with Thomas Tuchel – before insisting he was still the best man for the job.

The 54-year-old Dutchman has overseen a disappointing season and speculation was rife that he was set to lose his job before the Red Devils beat Manchester City to win the FA Cup.

However, that triumph at Wembley was not enough to quell rumors over his future as the Old Trafford chiefs looked to make a change during their end-of-season review.

It was widely reported that United held talks with other managers during the two-and-a-half-week period needed for the Ten Hag to get clarity on his future. And the club were honest with Ten Hag about their discussions with Tuchel before asking him to stay.

Speaking on NOS’s coverage of Euro 2024, Ten Hag said: “Manchester United told me they spoke to Tuchel, but in the end they came to the conclusion that they already have the best manager.”

It has since been reported that the club will offer Ten Hag a new contract. He has just one year left on his current contract, but the United boss added: “Me and Manchester United still have to find an agreement for the new contract. This is not easy, we will still have to talk about it. .”

Following reports that United were set to make a switch, a number of managers have been linked with the role, including Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Frank. However, Tuchel was considered the favorite to succeed the Ten Hag after refusing to extend his stay at Bayern Munich.
