How Danny Rohl’s pursuit of Ike Ugbo could have become ‘easier’ for Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday’s pursuit of Ike Ugbo could now be “a bit easier” after one key thing happened.

Sheffield Wednesday were eager to re-sign Ike Ugbo after his loan spell ended last month.

The striker has scored seven goals since joining the club from Troyes in January and is expected to leave France for good this summer.

Although the Owls have already made contact with Troyes over a potential move, it is believed they are not the only club interested and may have to pay a hefty fee to win the race for his signature.

Any move for Ugbo was expected to be delayed until after the Copa America, however, on Wednesday they may have received a boost in their bid to bring him back.

It was confirmed yesterday that the 25-year-old had been left out of Canada’s Copa America squad, before Jesse Marsch revealed that Ugbo had in fact opted out of the tournament for personal reasons.

Sheffield Wednesday could look to sign Ike Ugbo sooner than expected

That means Ugbo could be in Europe all summer, and journalist Joe Crann believes that could provide a major boost on Wednesday.

He wrote of X: “From a selfish perspective, may make life a little easier for #SWFC in pursuit of his signature.”

The striker’s omission could mean a move comes much sooner than initially anticipated, meaning Wednesday would not have had to wait more than a month to find out if he could land the first-choice No.9.

A permanent move for the striker still looks unlikely

It also means his price won’t rise drastically after what could have been an impressive campaign in the United States, which could also have led to a much longer list of interested clubs.

While that means things can’t get much more difficult for Wednesday in their pursuit, it still looks to be very difficult as it is.

It is unclear whether Ugbo would favor a return to Hillsborough, but there are likely a number of clubs whose finances could push them further than Danny Rohl’s side.
