Liverpool could review interest in the 84-goal striker as an alternative to Darwin Nunez

Liverpool are interested in signing Leny Yoro this summer, but the Frenchman is not the only player Lille have made available for transfer.

The Frenchman was out of contract a year later and has become one of the most sought-after youngsters in Europe as a result. However, despite the Reds’ interest in the 18-year-old, Real Madrid are believed to be favorites to land his signature.

That hasn’t deterred Liverpool chiefs from trying for Yoro, however, with the club prepared to pounce if a move from the La Liga giants falters. And any transfer has been aided by the Lille chairman confirming the defender is available to leave.

“Leny Yoro and Jonathan David can leave the club this summer,” Olivier Letang confirmed at a press conference to announce Bruno Genesio as Lilla’s new head coach earlier this week. “They both have the ‘exit voucher’ due to their contractual situation.”

David is a name that should also be familiar to Liverpool supporters, having been on the Reds’ shortlist of attacking targets when they signed Diogo Jota from Wolves in September 2020.

Liverpool will not regret opting for Jota over David and another pre-selected target, Ismaila Sarr, given that the Portuguese returned 56 goals and 19 assists from 145 appearances and helped the club win both domestic cups in the last four seasons.

However, Jota has been plagued by injuries at times and is now 27 years old. With doubts over Darwin Nunez lingering after a poor end to the season, and the long-term futures of Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz both uncertain, the Reds could soon find themselves in the market for a striker.

Ideally, a long-term replacement for Salah on the right is preferable. But another versatile option could tick boxes. And former target David, although mainly used as a striker for Lille, could prove to be just that.

The Canada international is still only 24, having just turned 20 when he swapped Gent for the Ligue 1 side in a €30m deal in August 2020.

Since then, he has scored an incredible 84 goals for the club from 183 appearances, netting 26 goals in each of the last two campaigns. He also helped Lille to the Ligue 1 title in his first year with the club, before scoring three times in the Champions League the following year as they suffered a round of 16 exit.

In a rare feature, David actually has two legs. As a result, he would be able to play on both flanks. And having been prolific in both Belgium and France as well as the Canadian national team, he boasts an impressive 147 career goals for club and country from 314 appearances to date.

Given Liverpool’s struggles in front of goal at times last season, such a player could be just what they need. And even if he is used in his favored center role rather than on the wings, that could ease the burden on Nunez, who has missed out.

The Reds liked the look of David four years ago, even if they favored Jota at the time. But now, aged 24, he fits their preferred pattern of signings.

And while he is not a similar long-term successor to Salah, his availability for a transfer before his own contract expires next summer certainly makes him an interesting prospect. As a result, it could be worth it for Liverpool to rekindle their previous interest if they want to sign another striker this summer as they continue to track Lille team-mate Yoro.
