Sheffield Wednesday join the race with Aiden McGinlay, another star on trial

Sheffield Wednesday are interested in Queen’s Park starlets Aiden McGinlay and Max Willoughby, the Daily Record said (Live Transfer News, 16/06/24, 14:54).

Sheffield Wednesday are in a busy summer transfer window and have already managed to do business since opening day last Friday.

Experienced goalkeeper Ben Hamer will join from Watford when his contract expires, while left-back Max Lowe makes a rare move from Sheffield United to join Danny Rohl and co.

Other targets are on the radar though, and it seems that it’s not just first-team signings that are wanted.

According to a report from the Daily Record, Sheffield Wednesday are tracking stars Aiden McGinlay and Max Willoughby, who are both on the books at Queen’s Park in the Scottish Premiership.

McGinlay has been linked with Championship clubs West Brom, Stoke City and more amid his impressive form north of the border and is now also on the Owls’ radar.

As for Willoughby, he has been summoned to Hillsborough for a trial until Wednesday. The talented defender could move on a free transfer with League One pair Reading and Blackpool also interested.

Double eye

McGinlay and Willoughby are not without suitors and Sheffield Wednesday will be hoping for a deal. A club of their stature has seen them attract some top prospects and, despite the competition, could put them in a good place to pull off a double strike for Queen’s Park prospects.

McGinlay has interest at the Championship level, which could make things difficult.

However, with the Willoughby defender already on trial and League One sides vying with the Owls for his signature, that could be the case on Wednesday.

Wednesday have given first-team opportunities to many prospects over the years and with a top-flight coach in Danny Rohl could make them an attractive destination. He has worked with some fantastic young players and showed no fear in giving Bailey Cadamarteri a chance to help the Owls in their pursuit.

Next summer

As we pointed out earlier, it didn’t take long for Sheffield Wednesday to make early moves in the transfer market.

Hamer and Lowe look like two solid signings and a deal for Yan Valery also appears to be in place.

Rohl and co will be sure to have the boards spinning on other potential deals, but doing some smart business early certainly makes for good reading.

With further additions in key areas of the first team and potential moves for the likes of McGinlay and Willoughby, Sheffield Wednesday could have a fruitful window if they can continue on this trajectory going forward.
