About 30 miles of highway have already been resurfaced

The scheme involves the addition of additional emergency zones, new technology and one lane in each direction on the motorway between junction 21a and junction 26.

All four lanes of the carriageway along sections of the route between the Croft and Orrell junctions are also being resurfaced.

The resurfacing work will require a number of overnight closures (between 9pm and 6am) over the next three weeks.

The first closure is planned for tomorrow (Tuesday 18th June) and will affect the M6 ​​southbound junctions 22 – 21a. The following closures are:

  • Junctions 22 – 23 M6 northbound: Tuesday 18ththThursday 20thmonday 24th and Wednesday the 26thth from June.
  • Junctions 23 – 22 southbound M6: Thursday 27th June.
  • Junctions 23 – 26 northbound M6: Thursday 27th and Friday the 28thth June.
  • Junctions 26 – 23 southbound M6: Wednesday 19thThursday 20thFriday the 21stStmonday 24thTuesday the 25thth and Wednesday the 26thth June.

About 30 miles of the additional resurfacing work has already been completed – more than half planned. Most of the 52 advanced motorway signs – based on overhead gantries – which display lane closures and variable speed limits – have been fitted and tested at the new motorway ports.

Also, nearly all 43 freeway side message signs, which will be used to provide incident and other information in text or pictograms, have been installed and tested. National Highways says all 22 emergency upgrade areas will be completed next month.
