Lifeless body found on Isles of Scilly 45 years ago still eluding cold case investigators

The discovery of a man’s body on a remote beach continues to elude cold case investigators after 45 years. On February 21, 1979, the lifeless man was found on Porth Minick beach in St Mary’s, Isles of Scilly.

The unidentified man is believed to have been born between the world wars and investigators estimate he was between 40 and 60 years old. But it’s a poignant detail on his ring finger that adds an extra layer to the romantic mystery.




He had been in the water for up to four months and, standing just 5ft 4 with gray and dark brown hair, wore a two-tone blue and white short-sleeved shirt paired with an Eltex fleece vest. In his right hand was a gold band with an inscription that read ‘Georgio and Katrina 1956’.

Four years ago, the team of investigators at Locate International decided to reopen the cold case in an attempt to finally establish the identity of the man nicknamed “Georgio”. One of the leads the team followed was that Georgio was likely a Greek crew member on board one of the two ships involved in the seventies maritime disasters.

Freya Couzens, the organization’s director of communications, said that for several years, its dedicated team of volunteer investigators has undertaken extensive genealogical research, tirelessly combing through records to find a match as a way to find the missing pieces of the love story of to Georgio and Katrina. .
