Sean Arkwright is motivated to perform as he returns to sound just weeks after his last fight

Sean Arkwright is celebrating a triumphant return to the ring after a two-year absence and is looking for a busy period with another bout scheduled for July 6 at a Liverpool show organized by his manager Steve Wood’s VIP Promotions.

“I boxed a tough and tricky opponent in Grimsby’s Tom Ramsden who is coming to win,” he said. “He had won the week before. I managed to keep it on the back foot and took every round comfortably so I got rid of any rust quickly.

“I’m keen to stay busy now that I’m back in the game. It would be great to have four games this year and maybe a few stops. The fight in July will be my first in six rounds and you show everyone how well I can handle so even longer fights with more challenging opponents are coming soon.”

Twenty-four-year-old Arkwright, from Wavertree, works part-time on the railway. The former St Francis Xavier Catholic Academy student started boxing at the age of ten at The Salisbury ABC, following in the footsteps of a grandfather “who was a strong amateur and my main inspiration”.

“I had a successful amateur career, winning 34 of my 45 matches, as well as several regional titles and reaching the national semi-finals twice,” he said. “I got a silver medal in the Monkstown Box Cup, only to lose the final to a European silver medallist.”

Arkwright, who describes himself as a “social person”, whose other love is Everton Football Club, now trains at Kirkdale ABC under Stephen Harkin, JJ Cunningham and Paul Davis. And Coach Harkin believes this will be a big year for his wrestler.

He said: “This is a big year for Sean who is moving on from a setback. He did the job last Saturday. There is a lot more to come in his boxing and he has it all going for him. Watch this space.”
