The reason why black streaks appeared on the Bermuda Bridge and on the roads around Nuneaton

Black streaks have appeared along the Bermuda Bridge and the roads around it due to “racetrack” fears. It’s been less than a month since the much-delayed bridge was finally opened to the public.

But there are already concerns about drivers speeding along the bridge itself and the roads leading to and from it, around Bermuda Village and St George’s Way. Locals said the area was being used as a “race track”, one even worried someone might be killed.

It comes after a postwoman was hit by a car while crossing Bermuda Road, close to the bridge. Arbury ward county councilor Clare Golby said she had been working with Warwickshire County Highways to try to address concerns at a local level.

As a result, specialist black strips have been placed at four four points on the route. These are at the top and bottom of Bermuda Road, on the bridge itself and on St George’s Road. “These lanes measure the speed and number of vehicles and will provide data on what’s going on.” she said.

CoventryLive raised concerns about the speed with the county council and in a statement, a spokesman for Shire Hall explained that the situation is being monitored.

“The speed limit along this route is 30mph and there are signs to reinforce this,” it said. “The route has been designed and built to the latest design standards for the established speed limit.
