Motorcyclist dies after crash with police car in Sutton

The driver of a moped has died following a crash with a police car in Sutton.

The incident happened in Wrythe Lane, at the junction with Erskine Road, at around 4.45pm today (June 17).

Officers, the London Ambulance Service and an air ambulance attended and found the moped rider injured.

He was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

Police inquiries are ongoing to identify and inform his next of kin.

Two officers in the squad car were taken to hospital for further treatment with minor injuries.

The police car was on routine patrol and was not responding to an emergency call before the accident.

Police say the incident was not a pursuit and the car’s blue lights and sirens were not working.

The Professional Standards Directorate and the Independent Office for Police Conduct were informed.

Road closures remain in place at the location and inquiries into the circumstances are ongoing.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “At around 4.45pm on Monday 17 June, a marked police car collided with a moped in Wrythe Lane, junction with Erskine Road, Sutton.

“The London Ambulance Service and the London Air Ambulance attended.

“Despite their best efforts, a man, the rider of the moped, died at the scene.

“Work is ongoing to identify and inform his next of kin.

“Two officers in the police car were taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

“Road closures remain in place at the location and inquiries into the circumstances are ongoing.

“This was not a pursuit and at the time of the collision the police car was on routine policing duty and not responding to an emergency call – blue lights and sirens were not in operation.

“As is routine in such circumstances, the Professional Standards Directorate has been informed.

“A referral has also been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.”
