DVSA warns drivers with suitcases in car face fines of more than £300 ‘and penalty points’

Drivers on a road trip this summer face a £300 fine for breaking a key DVSA rule. Fines of £300 could be slapped on drivers and road users on road trips and headed on holiday – all because of a suitcase mistake, experts have warned.

As the British summer continues (not that we’ve seen any sign of it), Brits heading out to see family or go away for the weekend have been warned. Those planning to travel with a lot of luggage must be careful not to overload their vehicle or they could face fines of up to £300 and three points on their licence.

This according to DVSA. Howden Insurance warned: “With almost three quarters of Brits planning to go on holiday in the UK this year, many will plan to drive to the airport at the start of their trip. It’s easy to overpack when planning a vacation, especially if you have kids.

“Rules about overpacking your car are often overlooked, but if you’re not careful, it could be the difference between a carefree start to your holiday and fines of up to £300.” And the AA warned: “The worst thing that could happen if you overload a car is that you could lose control while driving. If for any reason you must swerve to avoid an obstacle, you may not be able to control your vehicle. Items inside the car should also be strapped down to stop them moving in the event of a sudden stop – which could turn them into dangerous projectiles.

“Overloading your car is also an offence, punishable by a fine (usually between £100 and £300) and 3 points on your licence.” Always check a vehicle’s owner’s manual before adding excess weight – it will tell you the maximum weight allowed for your car. The maximum weight is usually indicated on a plate or sticker fitted to the vehicle.
