Wembley Primary School was rated ‘Inadequate’ in its latest Ofsted inspection

Byron Court Primary School in Spencer Road, Wembley, was rated ‘Inadequate’ in all categories in its most recent inspection carried out on November 28 and 29 last year.

The school, which was previously rated ‘Outstanding’ 11 years ago, has seen a decline in the quality of education, behavior and attitudes according to the inspection. “Since the previous inspection, significant changes in management have left the school with insufficient capacity to operate effectively. Management is overwhelmed. Too much responsibility is held by too few people.

“This has led to a marked deterioration in all aspects of the school’s work. Areas that require urgent improvement, including the school’s work to promote good behaviour, have been left unaddressed for too long. As a result, students are not receiving an acceptable standard of education,” the report said.

Inspectors noted: “Although the curriculum on offer is broad and ambitiously planned, the school has not ensured that it is well implemented. This is particularly the case for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). The learning of these students receives too little attention. Existing structures to identify pupils with SEND and support their learning are weak. Often their needs are not identified and met. This means that pupils with SEND are not progressing through the curriculum.”

The school didn’t do enough to make sure the students were well behaved. Behavior policies are poorly understood and inconsistently enforced. This means that student behavior and attitudes have decreased significantly over time.

Inspectors noted: “The school has failed to ensure good pupil behaviour, with poorly understood and inconsistently applied policies leading to a significant decline in behavior and attitudes. Lessons are frequently interrupted, breaks are chaotic, and the response to serious incidents is ineffective. Concerns about bullying persist among students, parents and carers due to inadequate management of these issues.”

The report continues: “The school offers many enrichment activities such as karate and cooking. These are successfully planned to help expand the wider experiences of students. However, the planning and delivery of Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) is not as successful in helping pupils to become respectful and well-rounded citizens. The use of racist language has been normalized and too few steps are being taken to address it.”

The report notes that the school is successfully working with parents to improve student attendance. In addition, it highlights that the safeguards are effective.

In a statement to Harrow Online, Nigel Chapman, corporate director for children and young people at Brent Council, said: “Since the Ofsted inspection at Byron Court, the local authority has worked closely with the school’s leadership team to provide support for solving problems. raised by Ofsted. There is an interim chief executive who is working closely with a new chair and deputy chair of governors to ensure that the necessary improvements are made as quickly as possible at the school for the benefit of all pupils.”
