M1 closed live as ‘police incident’ closes motorway in both directions

The M1 is closed in both directions due to a “police incident”.

According to our Inrix traffic management system, the motorway has been closed in both directions between junction 40 of the A638 Wakefield Road (Ossett/Wakefield) and junction 41 of the A650 Royston Hill (Carrgate). It causes long queues, the congestion stretches to junction 39.




Access roads were also closed at the junction of the 41 and 40. The nature of the incident is not yet known, but Yorkshire Live has asked West Yorkshire Police for comment.

Inrix said: “M1 closed in both directions, long delays due to police incident from J40 A638 Wakefield Road (Ossett / Wakefield) to J41 A650 Royston Hill (Carrgate). to the police incident on this stretch.”

West Yorkshire Police have been contacted for comment.


The M1 has reopened after a man in distress on the bridge

West Yorkshire Police said: “Emergency services were called to a bridge over the M1 at junction 40 at around 1.07pm to reports that a man was in distress there.

“A motorway closure was put in place at the junction while police and health services dealt with the man.

“He later got off safely and the motorway was reopened at 2.20pm”

Lanes have reopened, but delays remain

Long delays and all traffic temporarily stopped due to earlier incident on the M1 Southbound from J41 A650 Royston Hill (Carrgate) to J40 A638 Wakefield Road (Ossett / Wakefield). Congestion to M1 J39.

All southbound traffic was back up at 2:38 p.m. All northbound lanes are open.
