The latest from Birmingham Airport live as passengers issue warning amid travel chaos

Birmingham Airport has issued a travel warning for passengers amid reports of morning queues – with one tourist calling BHX “a total joke”. The flyer took to social media to vent about the queues snaking “right around the airport” this morning, June 18.

It follows a month of travel chaos at BHX and just 24 hours after passengers reported being “stuck” in a two-hour queue to get through security. Airport bosses have blamed the long delays on ongoing construction work inside the building.

BHX also issues daily warnings to passengers, urging them to only carry up to 100ml of liquids in hand luggage to speed up the queuing process. “Don’t put them in plastic bags in your carry-on and don’t take them out through security,” BHX warned.

New airport scanners will eventually allow passengers to carry two liters in hand luggage, but last-minute government rules meant tourists were still limited to just 100ml bottles.

Despite airport bosses hiring an extra 100 workers to help with delays, many are being asked to report to flight times ahead of schedule to ensure they get to their flight on time. A passenger flying today asked on social media: “He has to travel to work tomorrow, the flight is at 8.40am, he was told to be at the airport by 4.30am. So ridiculous!”

The future of escalators has been revealed

A passenger asked BHX this morning when they will reopen the escalators for upstairs access.

He added: “Using lifts only upstairs is a ‘bottleneck’ and was not a good decision.”

He, like many others, wants to know if the escalators to security are coming back.

Well, we have the answer right here: Birmingham Airport confirms the fate of its escalators as construction work nears completion

Passenger Says BHX Is ‘A Total Joke’

A passenger today described BHX as “a total joke”.

Taking to social media, the tourist said: “6am and queues right around the airport and on the streets. Give them a miss on this airport – they’ve made a big mistake.”

Passengers report a parking problem

Someone dropping off a traveler at BHX this morning reported trouble finding a place to park, even in the premium drop-off area.

Bryn called it a “mess”, saying: “No parking space this morning to drop off passengers in the premium car park. If only they had the same system as Heathrow and Gatwick”.

What causes delays?

In addition to some confusion over the changes to the 100ml carry-on bag rules, many passengers reported difficulty even getting through security as ongoing construction work at the airport changed the normal waiting process.

BHX said: “Our construction work on our new security area is still ongoing. This means that the security waiting area is mainly on the ground floor.

“Please note that all passengers arriving by train must proceed downstairs to join the security queue.”

It appears that this change is part of the reason for the delays. A passenger said yesterday: “Queuing this morning to get from the monorail arrival to the lift. At one point, new arrivals from the monorail struggled to get off the monorail because of the queue.

“He then joined another queue outside the airport to return to the same level, in the same lift, all BEFORE you got to the security queue.”

What is the 100 ml rule?

Despite plans to relax restrictions on the 100ml liquid rule for hand luggage due to improvements in security technology, the failure to install these improvements at every airport led the Government to change its guidance at the last minute, reverting to the change just over a week ago.

You can only carry 100 ml containers in your hand luggage. BHX states the rules explicitly on its website:

  • Only liquids, pastes and gels containers up to 100 ml can be carried in hand luggage – anything larger must be in checked luggage.
  • No liquids over this size.
  • Anything over 100ml will be removed and destroyed.
  • There is no limit for the amount of containers under 100 ml which can be worn.
  • Containers that can carry more than 100 mlsuch as insulated bottles are allowed but it must be completely empty.
  • Do not put liquids, pastes and gels in plastic bags (please leave them loose in your hand luggage).
  • Do not remove them from your carry-on when you are in the security search area.
  • Leave all electrical components in your hand luggage during the security search.
  • When you go through security, please make sure all items are removed from pockets including phones, keys, coins and tissues etc. Clocks can be left on.
