Tottenham tried to tempt Leeds United ‘special’ player to join them in 2023, now they want him again

Tottenham Hotspur could look to rekindle their interest in one of Leeds United’s top young talents this summer.

The Whites have a host of youngsters who are being sought after by Premier League clubs following their failure to win promotion from the Championship last season.

Those behind the scenes at Leeds have admitted that at least one key sale will be needed to comply with the PSR, although Red Bull’s lucrative investment has put them in a better position.

At this stage, Championship POTS Crysencio Summerville looks most likely to leave this summer, with Leeds showing no real determination to keep him.

That said, Leeds won’t be bullied into selling on the cheap and a price tag of over £30m has been set, with Brighton the first club to open talks over a deal.

Update shared on Tottenham’s interest in Leeds star Archie Gray

While Leeds’ financial position is nowhere near as bad as it has been made out, the likely sale of Summerville will not only stop interest in his other players.

In Willy Gnonto, Archie Gray and Georginio Rutter, Leeds have some really bright young talents on their books who must attract interest over the next two and a half months.

And Gray is certainly someone who features heavily on squad shortlists after his debut first-team campaign at his boyhood club.

According to Athletic, Tottenham are one of the teams interested in signing him this summer, having scouted him “extensively” in recent years.

Spurs are even said to have made a bid to tempt the ‘special’ Gray to north London in 2023, even before putting pen to paper on his first professional deal at Leeds.

Gray was then handed a longer-term deal earlier this year, which puts Leeds in a good position when it comes to trying to keep him.

Chairman Paraag Marathe was unable to commit when asked about Gray earlier this month, but the 18-year-old’s desire to stay, as well as Summerville’s imminent arrival, puts Leeds in a good position .

What would it take for Leeds to sell Gray?

As mentioned, Leeds are in a strong position when it comes to keeping Gray thanks to the investment from Red Bull and the likely big sale of Summerville.

Having also recently signed a new deal, Gray will by no means be leaving on the cheap this summer.

It is said that it would take a “mammoth” bid for Leeds to even consider listening to offers for Gray, although an exact figure has yet to be put on his head.

From an outsider’s perspective, anything less than £50m would not be enough given what he could be worth if Leeds make it to the Premier League.
