Police “didn’t do all they could” after a Huddersfield woman was hit and killed by a car

The family of a Huddersfield woman who was knocked down and killed by a car have raised concerns about the police investigation.

Much-loved mum Jeanette Mason was walking along a footpath in Waterloo, Huddersfield, in May 2021 when she was hit by a Fiat Panda driven by Melvyn Wade, then 71. Mr Wade told police he “got dizzy” moments before losing control.

The Fiat was traveling along Wakefield Road when it mounted a pavement, ran a red light and crossed the road, colliding with mother-of-three Jeanette and a stone wall, it was previously heard by investigate. Jeanette was thrown into some bushes on impact and sadly died at the scene despite the best efforts of a nurse who performed CPR.

Mrs Mason’s husband David is believed to have made a complaint to West Yorkshire Police in relation to the investigation, a coroner heard this week.

The coroner in the case, Angela Brocklehurst, also expressed her own concerns about the investigation and called it a “sorry situation” that the police “didn’t do everything that could have been done”.

She said there appeared to be “some inconsistency” in the evidence relating to Mr Wade’s journey that day and said there were “anomalies” in relation to the car “mounting the curb during the journey – either once or twice”.

Ms Brocklehurst also said some “anonymous notes” had been left and it was unclear where they came from.

Mr Mason told the hearing he met with a police inspector in April to discuss his concerns.

On Monday this week, the coroner adjourned the hearing until the end of this year.

At an earlier hearing, David Mason described his wife as a “lovely lady” who was kind, generous and lived for her family.

“She would go out of her way to help people. She had a great sense of humor. She was totally devoted to her family – they were the center of her world.”

David said Jeanette had been visiting the shops on the day she died. He said her death came “totally without warning” and everyone did everything they could to save her.

He said the family took solace that her death “came in a flash” and that she had “packed a lot into her 53 years”. Jeanette had been a huge Huddersfield Giants fan and was a proud and loving grandmother to Jack.
