The accused’s family had refused to attend the ceremony of his sister Amaani Jhangur and groom Hasan Khan that morning on December 27 last year. But members of the Jhangur family turned up at Khan’s home in College Close, Burgreave, Sheffield hours later.

The jury heard how Chris was on a family outing after Christmas when his child wanted to try out his new skateboard. But he had inadvertently stepped into the midst of the commotion. His wife took the kids home while Chris went to help.

Prosecutor Tom Storey KC told Sheffield Crown Court: “Chris and his family returned to the family home in Sheffield after spending Christmas at his parents’ house. A little later that afternoon, the family went for a walk in the area immediately around their house, one of their children was eager to get out on their new skateboard.
