Police have discovered “numerous safety issues” after an operation targeting large passenger vehicles in Devon and Cornwall.

Police said they targeted buses, coaches, minibuses and private vehicles in the first week of May and identified 20 offences.

Five Fixed Penalty Notices were issued for offenses around the driver’s working hours, six late notices were given for engine failure and tachograph offences, and two warnings were given for seat belt misuse, have said Devon and Cornwall Police.

Officers were based at Moto Services in Exeter and carried out checks on 27 vehicles, police said.

“Incredible Damage”

Inspector Simon Jenkinson, from the Alliance Roads Policing team, said road safety was “a shared responsibility between all road users”.

“It is essential that these large vehicles – which are capable of causing incredible damage – are driven in accordance with the law and kept in good working order for the sake of drivers, passengers and all other road users,” he said.

“We will be running similar operations throughout the year so I would urge any operator of such vehicles to ensure they are compliant.”

Natalie Warr, from the Vision Zero South West road safety partnership, added: “Everyone has a role to play when it comes to road safety, not least those who use the roads commercially and carry large numbers of passengers.

“As a partnership we are committed to reducing the number of people killed and seriously injured on Devon and Cornwall’s roads.”

Other issues identified by police included a report of no insurance, a warning for tinted windows offences, a prohibition notice for no tachograph, protective plates or ring guards, a report for two flat tires and two reports for tachograph offences. .
