Sheffield Wednesday QPR links with Cameron Humphreys have been cut

Sheffield Wednesday and QPR were linked with Rotherham United’s Cameron Humphreys earlier this month and Millers boss Steve Evans has now played down the rumours.

Sheffield Wednesday and QPR have beaten the odds to avoid relegation to League One in the 2023/24 season, but Rotherham United have not been so lucky.

Inspirational appointments at Hillsborough and Loftus Road were key in the Owls and R’s attempts to survive. Danny Rohl and Marti Cifuentes drew plaudits for their efforts as the Millers slipped to the Championship under Leam Richardson.

Steve Evans is now back in charge at the AESSEAL Stadium in New York and an immediate return to Championship football will be the aim.

However, Rotherham United may have to drop their interest in key players such as Cameron Humphreys. Sheffield Wednesday, QPR, Millwall and Swansea City were also linked with the defender earlier this month.

Now Millers boss Evans has reacted to the links.

It makes good reading for Rotherham fans too, with Evans telling the Rotherham Advertiser that he is not aware of any interest in Humphreys. The manager joked about the rumored interest on Wednesday, saying:

“If it’s mentioned with Wednesday, then I’m not surprised if it’s also mentioned with Thursday and Friday.

“Cameron has been very good for me in the three games he has played but we are not aware of any interest from any club.”

Who is this?

THE QUIZ STARTS!

Does it deserve a return to the championship?

Humphreys has been a reliable performer for Rotherham United and despite their struggles it has still been a decent campaign for him on an individual level.

As such, it would be no surprise at all if the former Manchester City man returned to Championship level this summer, although Evans’ words suggest that reports of early interest are just as well.

However, Sheffield Wednesday, QPR, Millwall and Swansea City could all make moves further afield.

That will give the club and Humphreys a decision to make. The Millers will be keen to keep hold of key players in their bid to win promotion, but the centre-back may want to return to the Championship sooner rather than later given the success he has found there.

His contract situation is also worth considering. Humphreys has a year under his contract with Rotherham, so rejecting approaches this summer could put them in danger of losing him for nothing next year.

The defenders wanted

Sheffield Wednesday and QPR will both be in the market for fresh faces at the back this summer and it wouldn’t be a surprise if Humphreys is indeed someone on their radar.

His situation at relegated Rotherham could make him a feasible addition, even if Evans laughed off early rumours.

Wednesday currently have Bambo Diaby, Michael Ihiekwe and Akin Famewo signed with the club beyond the end of this summer. Question marks still surround the futures of Di’Shon Bernard and Dominic Iorfa as their trades wind down.

As for QPR, Jimmy Dunne, Steve Cook and Jake Clarke-Salter are contracted to the club. The latter has been heavily linked with Celtic, so an exit for him would add another centre-back to their shopping list, with more options in the center of defense potentially already on Rangers’ radar.
