Former mansion hotel where Edward VIII once courted Wallis Simpson for sale

An 81-bedroom Edwardian mansion in Leicestershire has been put on the market. Scalford Country House Hotel near Melton Mowbray is available for offers from around £3,250,000 with Colliers agents.

Although currently defunct, the former “popular” hotel offers function rooms that can accommodate up to 150 people, as well as a marquee with a capacity of 600. The building is accompanied by eight acres of land and also has five rooms additional staff.

Built in the early 20th century, the building was once owned by Colonel Colman, a friend of Edward VIII; the monarch is said to have stayed at the mansion during his courtship with Wallis Simpson. The mansion has been converted into a hotel and is owned by the Singh family since 2018.

Josh Sullivan, associate director at Colliers, said: “The Scalford Country House Hotel is a classic Edwardian house steeped in history and previously a popular venue for leisure, wedding and business guests. Due to its proximity to Melton Mowbray, the site offers a number of opportunities for added value in the form of a repositioning of the existing asset or a form of planning gain and change of use, subject to the relevant permissions.”

Colliers said the property, with “scenic” views of the Leicestershire countryside, offered “ample” opportunity for “creative management”. You can find out more information about the property on their website.
