The Met Office is issuing a thunderstorm warning of 50mm of hail, lightning, wind and rain

The Met Office has issued a storm warning after it said an Atlantic weather system would crash into Britain. Most of Wales and much of England have been covered by the yellow alert which comes into force at 12pm on Sunday and lasts for 10 hours.

The alert says: “Heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop south of this area late Sunday morning and early Sunday afternoon, moving steadily north as they build into larger areas of rain before clearing the area. Some heavy showers are possible in a few places, with up to 30mm falling in less than an hour and perhaps 40-50mm in 2 to 3 hours leading to surface water flooding.

“Hail, frequent lightning and strong gusty winds will be additional localized hazards.”

What to expect

  • Spraying and flash flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • Where there is flooding or lightning, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations of train and bus services
  • There is a small chance that power outages will occur and other services to some homes and businesses will be lost
  • There is a small chance that fast-flowing water or deep flooding could be life-threatening, especially in places like road and railway underpasses.
  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses will be flooded quickly, with some buildings damaged by floodwaters, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.
