Jay Slater missing from Tenerife LIVE updates as desperate search for teenager continues

Desperate search continues for missing British teenager in Tenerife.

Jay Slater, from Oswaldtwistle in Lancashire, is currently missing on the Spanish island after traveling there for a music festival with his friends. He last spoke to his girlfriend Lucy at around 8am yesterday (June 17) before his phone went dead.




Jay had been staying with people he met on the island after a night on the town, Lucy said. But their flat was “in the middle of nowhere” and Jay’s phone ran out of battery when he left to return yesterday morning.

The area where his phone was last tracked is in the Rural Park of Teno – or Teno National Park – which is a popular area for hikers. Before Jay’s phone died, he told Lucy he “didn’t know where he was”.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs supports his family. Spanish police are aware of Jay’s disappearance and a number of searches are now believed to be underway.

Drones and dogs deployed to search

The search, led by the Guardia Civil with agents of the Special Rescue Group for Mountain Intervention (GREIM) and drones, was carried out in the west of the island of Tenerife, Canarian Weekly reported.

So far, they have focused on the surroundings of the city of Masca in the municipality of Buenavista del Norte. The search will continue tomorrow.

Jay’s family is supported by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

Family and friends to continue another day of searching for Jay tomorrow morning

A post shared on a Facebook group dedicated to finding Jay, now with more than 50,000 members, said the search involving friends and family would resume tomorrow.

Rach Louise Harg wrote: We will arrange searches in the morning as it gets dark if people want to get involved then please comment if you are in Tenerife.

My inbox is going crazy, please bear with me. I promise if there is an update I will update this group right away! Thanks for all the love. We will find Jay!!!”

Where was Jay before he disappeared?

On Sunday (June 16), Jay attended the final day of a three-day NRG festival at the Papagayo Tenerife beach club in the south of the island, which was close to his accommodation, reports the Manchester Evening News.

But after the event, his friends said he left in a rental car with new friends he met.

He then apparently tried to return from the apartment where he had been staying after missing the bus.

His phone then died, his last known location being recorded in the “Rural de Teno” park, close to a hiking trail above the village of Masca.

Snapchat images taken by relative Isabelle Price show Jay laughing and smiling around 8.35pm the night before he disappeared.

His outfit is believed to be what he was last seen wearing. It shows him wearing a light gray top with green shoulders and a black bag.

The search is currently focused on the hamlet of Masca, in the municipality of Buenavista del Norte, Europe Press reported.

It is understood the police report was made by Jay’s friends who he was on holiday with when he went missing.

Debbie, who has since flown to Tenerife, said: “Some of the calls we got were horrible. I just don’t know why people would want to do such things.

Mountain rescue teams and helicopters deployed to search

A Civil Guard spokesman said mountain rescue teams and helicopters had been deployed to search for the missing Jay.

A spokesman said SUN: “A specialized mountain rescue and intervention group called Greim was mobilized. A police helicopter is also out and focusing on the area around the village of Masca.

“Every effort is being made to try and locate the missing man.”

Tenerife resident prints missing posters to put up around Adeje

A local, who lives in Tenerife, has printed missing posters to put up around Adeje.

They wrote on social media: “I’ve lived in Tenerife for two years but I know Jay from home so so many people from Tenerife I know share on social media, everyone is aware.

“I’ve just printed a lot of missing posters, I’m going around the area where he was last seen and all over Adeje to put them up wherever I can.”

Jay’s mother reveals her son was Snapchat friends before his disappearance

Jay Slater’s mother Debbie revealed her son had been chatting with friends on snapchats before his disappearance.

Debbie said:

“He had been at a three-day festival so he would have consumed quite a bit of alcohol, but Jay was talking to friends before he disappeared and seemed very sympathetic.

“I think it was just that he didn’t know the island well enough because it was his first time here and he was a bit disoriented when it came to distances and he didn’t realize it was a 10-hour walk from where he disappeared up to him. holiday accommodation.”

Jay Slater’s mother Debbie said she was “not worried” in her first comments since landing in Tenerife following her son’s disappearance.

Debbie said:

“I’ve only been in Tenerife for about 10 minutes and I’ve just had a quick chat with someone from the British Embassy and I’m waiting for them to call me back so I know a bit more. The consulate has been very good so far.

“Obviously I’m not worried, which is why I flew here with my eldest son to do what we can to help.

“We’re just praying the police or someone finds Jay. I know there is a mountain rescue team and a helicopter.

“Nothing will be enough when your youngest son goes missing, but it looks like the police here are taking this very seriously and doing their best job.”

Drones used in the search after the missing person alert on Monday at 9.04am

A spokesman for a regional emergency coordination center in Tenerife said drones were also being used in the search for Jay.

The spokesperson said:

“The Civil Guard is coordinating this operation because it is responsible for investigations involving missing persons.

“We act as their support and they are the ones who ask for more resources as and when they feel they are needed. The Civil Guard is involved, as well as firefighters and Civil Protection workers who have two drones.

“Yesterday a helicopter of the regional government was mobilized, but today it is a helicopter of the Civil Guard, as well as the team of Greim mountain specialists. The alert about this missing young man was received at four minutes after 9am yesterday and the search began soon after and continued into the night. .

“I understand this man was later officially reported missing to the police.”

Tenerife police say they are “doing everything possible” to find Jay

Spanish police said they were “doing everything possible” to find Jay.

A spokesman for the Tenerife Civil Guard said emergency teams were searching near the village of Masca in the Parque Rural de Teno.

A police helicopter is used over the mountainous area, which is popular with hikers. Firefighters and rescuers are also involved in the desperate search.

Jay’s friend Lucy describes how Jay disappeared

Talking to Barbie of Jay’s disappearance, Lucy, who is in Tenerife, said:

“He went out one night, he went to a friend’s house, someone he met on vacation. One of the people he met rented a car from here, so he took them back to his apartment and Jay left. there without realizing how far it is.

“He ended up in the middle of nowhere. Jay obviously thought he could get home from there.

“But then in the morning he set off on foot, using the maps on his phone, and ended up in the middle of the mountains with nothing around. He called me around 8am saying his phone was on 1%, he said. “I don’t know where I am, I need a drink and my phone is about to die.”

It was tracked yesterday morning in the Rural Park of Teno – or the National Park of Teno.

The area is mostly rural and popular with hikers.

The nearest city is Santiago del Teide.

The Foreign Office is supporting Jay’s family

Officials are in contact with local authorities in Tenerife.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said:

“We are supporting the family of a British man who has been reported missing in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities.”
