Excessive heat warning: Peabody opens cooling centers this week

PEABODY, MA — With temperatures expected to hit 100 degrees this week, Peabody has opened several cooling centers around town for those in need of air conditioning.

North Shore Community Action Programs at 119 R Foster Street will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 4:30 p.m. All three branches of the Peabody Institute Library will also be open during normal business hours on Tuesday and Thursday.

On Wednesday’s Juneteenth holiday, the Peter A. Torigian Senior Center on Central St. 75 will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Residents are encouraged to check on elderly neighbors and family members, as well as those with medical conditions, drink plenty of fluids, avoid alcoholic beverages and liquids high in sugar or caffeine, and limit outdoor physical activity between 11 a.m. – 15:00, when the sun is strongest.
