Wigan Athletic winger Jordan Jones is saying goodbye at the end of his contract

Wigan Athletic winger Jordan Jones has bid farewell to the club after confirming he will leave at the end of his contract.

Wigan Athletic brought Jones to the club in the summer of 2021, signing him from Rangers.

His time with Latics was not always the easiest, with two spells away from the club in the Scottish Premiership with St. Mirren and Kilmarnock. However, he has found a place in the team in the 2023/24 campaign and has impressed out wide for Shaun Maloney.

Jones chipped in with three goals and nine assists from the left side in 33 outings. He only played 17 games for Wigan Athletic before his campaign.

After a strong campaign, it was hoped he would stay at the DW Stadium beyond his current contract.

However, as confirmed on Tuesday morning, Jones will move from the League One side. Now he has taken to social media to say goodbye to the club and its loyal supporters.

The Northern Ireland international expressed his disappointment that the talks ended without a successful outcome, but Jones was fully respectful of the situation and wished Wigan Athletic all the best for the coming years.

He leaves with three goals and 11 assists to his name in 50 appearances.

Who is this?

THE QUIZ STARTS!

A gap in demands

The ‘situation’ Jones mentions probably refers to the reported differences between what Jones’ representatives claimed and what Wigan Athletic had offered.

However, the winger’s reaction is a welcome one and his departure message has been met with well-wishes from many Latics fans looking to see what lies ahead for the winger.

As we touched on before, his time with the club wasn’t always the best. Jones has been out on loan a few times amid a struggle for action but has found a place in Maloney’s squad and proved to be a huge asset last season.

Against that background, Jones should have some good options for next season as a new challenge awaits the former Sunderland loanee.

An exciting season ahead

Wigan Athletic will be keen to manage expectations for next season, but excitement is building as Maloney takes on his second full season at the helm.

They have bounced back well after starting last season with a points deduction and have been a good match for the division’s strongest teams on more than one occasion.

If star players can be retained and some eye-catching signings arrive, Latics could well be back in the promotion picture in the 2024/25 campaign after cementing their place in the third tier last season.

As Wigan Athletic embark on an exciting campaign, departing winger Jones will wish the team all the best as they head into a new chapter of their own.
