The Leeds United player addresses himself as the ‘nation’s idiot’ – tackling any criticism head on

Leeds United defender Maximilian Wöber is fighting back against his critics in recent hours.

The centre-back is blamed by some for Austria’s defeat to France, he scored an own goal which turned out to be decisive in the 1-0 defeat.

Wöber has not shied away from his responsibility and today the Leeds player faced the local media in a press conference. In the quotes provided by the Kurier, he had a lot to say about the criticism and his willingness to talk to the press.

“After a game like that, where you’re the idiot of the nation, it’s not a bad thing to get up and do your part so it’s over and I can focus on the Euros again.” said the Leeds player in a press conference.

“The whole team and coaching staff, family and friends got me back on track so that I can be positive again and can still record as a proud moment in my career that I played for Austria at the Euros and I sung national anthem shoulder to shoulder with my friends. It’s another moment I’ll never forget. That’s exactly what I’m going to take with me now, I’ll forget the rest.”

Wöber was one of a number of players to leave Leeds following their relegation to the Championship last summer. He was loaned to Borussia Mönchengladbach where he made 28 appearances this season.

Now the Austrian national team needs a quick recovery from that first round defeat. They won’t have an easy task though as their next group stage matches will be against Poland and the Netherlands.

Wöber is preparing for that and Leeds United will be hoping for some good performances to help his value this summer.
