Daniel Farke will find Leeds United ‘solutions’ and won’t point the finger at failing players

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke refused to point the finger at his players after their shock 1-0 defeat at home to Blackburn Rovers saw them miss out on a return to the top of the Championship table.

A late goal from Sammy Szmodics gave the visitors a surprise victory and meant the Whites could not capitalize on Leicester City’s defeat by Plymouth Argyle on Friday night. Leeds were the better side but failed to capitalize on their chance to suffer their first home defeat of the season.

Farke, however, did not blame the players but took a collective approach, insisting it was up to everyone involved in the playing squad to come up with solutions. Leeds have won just one of their last five games and scored just one goal in their last three.

“No, we’re one unit,” Farke said when asked if the players should take “the blame” for not converting the three-point dominance. “I always ask myself first what I could do better before the players. If 30 corners are not enough to score, I have to create 40 corners in the next two games.

“In training, we need to work on efficiency and create more situations, although I know what you mean. I created more than enough to score today. I’m not pointing at the players. I have to find solutions for them.”

Leeds now have just three games left to secure a place in the top two, with Leicester City holding a crucial game in hand. For Farke, the reason for the failure against Blackburn was simple, but the German knows they can show better quality around the box.

“We didn’t put the ball in the net,” he added. “That’s the reason. If he doesn’t score, then you can’t win. When you face a team like this, with Szmodics, he doesn’t create much for them, but he has 24 goals, it’s remarkable. Quality we haven’t shown. today. Need a chance to sign up.

“We had so many good positions today on the edge of their box. In the last two games we had 30 corners and 20 wide free kicks. So many balls in the box. We brought attacking players to chase three points there and that maybe allow chances at the other end. We didn’t show the necessary quality around the box.”
