Birmingham Airport live as 100 workers recruited to stop queue ‘chaos’

Birmingham Airport has recruited 100 ‘liquids consultants’ to deal with the UK’s sudden change in liquid rules. In recent weeks, there have been scenes of “chaos” as hundreds of passengers queue to enter the terminal through construction work, particularly during the morning rush hour.

The airport confirmed that staff had been drafted in as they worked to stop queues at peak times. Staff will be in front of any scanners to ensure passengers only carry 100ml liquid containers.

So far this week, there have been fewer reports of disruption, but passenger anxiety remains about what to do with liquids and how long to leave before a flight. This morning, June 19, a BHX traveler said he was through security in an hour and ten minutes from car to departures.

The airport said that despite investing millions in its new security hall, it cannot make full use of it because of a British government directive on liquids and the fact that it has yet to free up more ground space.

It is hoped that the recruitment of new liquid staff will make the airport much easier to use from this week. Many called for an urgent rethink to get the terminal in order before the anticipated rush of summer holidays.

Birmingham Airport chief executive Nick Barton took BirminghamLive around the airport on June 11 to update us on the terminal works, where we asked him the escalator question along with other passenger concerns about scenes of chaos in the queue .

Mr Barton revealed that key features such as escalators had been removed for “health and safety”. The under fire boss went into detail about how he fights the chaos caused by queues, you can read more about it here.

Where are the new staff located?

Airport chief executive Nick Barton told BirminghamLive that BHX had employed specialist “liquid consultants” to monitor each entrance to the airport and help passengers prepare their bags for the security hall.
