Supermarket wars in Greater Manchester city as big name plans new store in wake of crisis

A new Lidl store with a bakery could open in Stockport. The supermarket submitted a planning application in April to open a site near Wellington Road North and Sparthfield Road in Heaton Norris.

Includes a sales area; deposit; cold room; bakery; and customer toilets. Bicycle parking is in the plans; as well as a parking lot with 98 spaces; and a delivery area. Two new pedestrian routes are proposed from Sparthfield Road and Wellington Road North, providing direct access to the store via the car park.

A new priority junction would be created “situated away from the A6” for vehicular access to the site. The land was previously used as a Mercedes Benz car dealership and showroom, but is currently vacant.

Lidl has another site in Stockport on Hempshaw Lane, south of the city centre. It is also planning a new store on Stockport Road, Cheadle Heath.

The supermarket chain has been granted a High Court judicial review of the site proposed by Tesco, which challenged Lidl and Stockport council over the availability of stores in the area.

This was linked to an existing Aldi store on New Bridge Lane, east of Stockport town centre. According to planning documents, Tesco sought leave to challenge the High Court’s dismissal through the Court of Appeal.

Tesco, Asda and Aldi have also lodged objections to an earlier planning application for a Lidl store on the site, which was approved in November 2022. A Tesco Extra store is located nearby on Tiviot Way near the Portwood roundabout .
