John Egan weighs up Sheffield United’s future amid Premier League bids

John Egan missed almost the entire season due to injury.

Ireland defender John Egan says he will weigh up his Sheffield United future when the time comes, with two Premier League clubs interested in his signature this summer.

The Corkman is now fit after being sidelined with a foot injury in September but will soon become a free agent with his contract at Bramall Lane expiring this month.

As the Blades prepare for Championship football next season following relegation from the Premier League, two top clubs are interested in signing the 31-year-old centre-half for the upcoming campaign.

With Sheffield in talks over a new deal to keep Egan at the club, he insists his only focus at the moment is to keep himself sharp ahead of pre-season, but admitted he would like to sort out his the future soon.

“Where I’m at is making sure I’m fully fit for pre-season. Those conversations are happening in the background, they’re over my head,” Egan said, speaking for Pringles.

“For the last few months, I’ve just been preparing to be fully fit for pre-season. I’m in a great place now. That was at the forefront of my mind, getting fully fit.”

Asked about a potential move to the Premier League this summer, Egan said: “Most of these things are out of my hands. As a player, all I can do is focus on getting my body up to speed.

“Discussions will take place in the background and when the time comes, when there is an offer or a decision to be made, everything will be weighed. My main goal now is to keep training and keep working really hard. When the time comes for a decision to be made, a decision will be made.

“Ideally I’d like to sort something out soon, but as I’ve said before, these discussions are going on in the background and as a player all I can do now is make sure I’m 100% recovered from this injury and continue to work hard to get myself in the best possible shape for pre-season.”

Egan, capped 36 times for Ireland since his debut in 2017, has not played at international level since September’s defeat to the Dutch, missing the last four camps through injury.

He will be in line to return for the Boys in Green in September as the Nations League campaign kicks off with a home double against England and Greece.
