Wes Foderingham will make the switch to West Ham

Sheffield United man Wes Foderingham is expected to join West Ham on a free transfer, according to The Athletic.

Sheffield United are preparing for life in the Championship this season.

The Blades were relegated last season having not adapted to the Premier League at all. Chris Wilder is back at the helm for next season and while his history with the club is strong, his recent CV leaves question marks over whether Sheffield United will return to the top flight any time soon.

Foderingham, 33, made 30 appearances for Sheffield United in the Premier League last season. He made just one free and conceded 79 goals, the Blades’ defense often non-existent.

However, West Ham’s No.2 goalkeeper Nathan Trott is set to join Copenhagen and the Hammers are targeting Foderingham as his replacement, with a free transfer expected next month.

Reports suggest talks have progressed and with the 33-year-old’s contract at Bramall Lane set to expire at the end of this month, a move is now expected.

Who is this?

THE QUIZ STARTS!

Experience at your fingertips

The experienced shot-stopper has plenty of games under his belt, having been a regular during his time at Sheffield United and at times during his time at Rangers.

He will be an older head in the West Ham dressing room and while he may not play much, his voice and leadership will likely be called upon often.

Sheffield United will have to look for a replacement and it remains to be seen who they will look to add to fill the gap that will remain in the squad.

Laying the groundwork

Sheffield United could settle down this season and, before thinking about promotion, just make sure the foundations are there to be built to allow for long-term stability over short-term success.

The Blades have a lot of work to do over the summer window and Wilder’s job is a mammoth one. However, if I understand correctly, he has proven in the past that he can take the club forward.

Before returning to Bramall Lane, Wilder had spells at both Middlesbrough and Watford. Neither has really worked for him, but he’s a safe pair of hands for the Championship and given his track record with the club, he’s a reliable person to get them through this transition period.
