Jon Wilkin’s verdict on Rohan Smith ahead of his departure from Leeds Rhinos

Leeds Rhinos have parted ways with Rohan Smith, but before that, Jon Wilkin has weighed in on whether he should make the switch.

Less than an hour before Smith’s departure was announced after two seasons at the club, Wilkin spoke on Sky Sports’ ‘The Verdict’ about whether he was under pressure.

He said, “Yeah, I think pressure is an interesting thing, isn’t it? Because if you’re good at something, pressure comes with the territory.

“If you are a good club, the pressure is there all the time. So there is pressure on Leeds all the time.

“And Rohan Smith is undoubtedly under pressure. He’s under pressure from day one.

“That pressure is building because Leeds have been working, I think, on a recruitment issue for a number of years. He seems to have grown this year with the players they’ve brought in.”

Wilkin then began giving his opinion on the team’s performances this year and didn’t hold back.

He said: “They look beaten at home. Now, every now and then when you’re at games, you catch moments.

“I’m looking at the Leeds bench (during the Hull FC game). They were really into it and I sat there with our heads in my hands – it was almost as if they had resigned themselves to defeat.

They were still in the game at this point, but they looked beat.”

Such a mentality can often be down to the manager not resonating with the squad and Ian Blease and Gary Hetherington will now be looking to bring in someone who can strike a chord with them.

Wilkin continued: “Leeds are simply too big a club with too many expectations to sit where they are in the competition.

“It’s not acceptable to me, you know, as a rugby league fan, for a club like Leeds with the resources they have to sit where they sit.

“It is not acceptable. The fans and people around the club in Leeds should not be made to feel that it is acceptable where they are.

“They should be unhappy with the form and where they are at the moment.”

Now many fans are hoping for change amid rumors that Paul Rowley could be heading to Headingley.
