Second Health and Safety Fair for Seniors is growing in Cornwall

The City of Cornwall’s Aging Well: Senior Health and Safety Fair looks set to enjoy a few golden years already.

The second edition of the event on Wednesday took place in the early afternoon to surpass the attendance numbers of the inaugural edition in September 2022 and the exhibitor statistics are trending very well in 2024 as well.

“It just keeps getting bigger,” said Norm Quenneville, an original senior friendly community committee member who has been active for about a decade. “And I think this is a great time of year to hold it. It’s pretty hot today, but (the event is) accessible and it’s a really good place for it.”

Just after the lunch hour started, 400 people had already passed through the doors of the fair, booths set up almost the entire distance of the lower level area.

“We had 600 people come last time and we’ll probably top that today,” Quenneville said.

There were 40 exhibitors 21 months ago, but this time the number is up to 55 — “and with a waiting list,” Quenneville said.

The number of workshops has decreased, by design. This time, the organizers narrowed down the offerings to some of the most requested by polling, one being a presentation on scams that included Cornwall Police Service Const. The fair was a free event open to all, showcasing services and programs for seniors and their caregivers. To increase accessibility, free bus rides were provided by Cornwall Transit.

To drive engagement and interaction, a passport/bingo activity was introduced for attendees, encouraging them to visit different booths to collect stamps.

“Aging well means maintaining our independence, ensuring a high quality of life, staying active and engaged in our communities as we age, and ensuring a higher quality of life in our senior years,” said Bernard Lamarche , president of the senior-friendly organization. community committee.

“This fair is a great opportunity for seniors and their caregivers to access valuable resources, learn new skills and connect with a wide range of services that support healthy and vibrant aging.”

Exhibitors ranged from senior clubs, education and volunteer opportunities, municipal services, nursing homes and recreation programs.

There was an opportunity to win prizes, including a new $1,995 Amylior GS 100 scooter donated by the grand prize sponsor.

This event was funded in part by the Canadian Government’s New Horizons for Seniors Program and presented by the Senior Friendly Community Committee and the Cornwall and Area Social Development Council.
