Start your engines! Racing returns to Wakefield Park

The iconic Tirrannaville regional track has not had a hot lap in 2 years as the facility has been closed since September 2022 following an ongoing noise issue.

The NSW Government has committed to working with stakeholders to implement noise mitigation measures to minimize the impact of noise on surrounding properties around the runway.

Stage 1 work has now been completed at the venue, which has been rebranded as One Raceway, with a reconfiguration of the track and large 13 to 18 meter high noise mounds created at the north and south ends of the track to better protect surrounding dwellings from on-site noise generation.

This is another great announcement for the NSW racing community following the Government’s work to restart Speedway racing this season.

The track also provides a number of services to the Goulburn community such as driver training and safety programs.

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully said:

“The racetrack has a long and storied history spanning over 30 years, with Goulburn being the historic home of motor racing, having held Australia’s first motorcycle and car grand prix.

“The NSW Government has delivered yet another important election commitment to have Wakefield Park Raceway back and running in a way that also mitigates race noise.

“Wakefield Park Raceway is an important community facility for the people of the Goulburn region and the state. It also provides vital driver training and safety programs that benefit the local community.

“The motor racing community and industry are eagerly anticipating the track’s grand reopening. The new owners have brought in some exciting racing additions, including a two-way circuit – which they say is an Australian first.”

Duty MLC Bob Nanva said:

“Wakefield Park holds a special place in the community, not only for its pedigree but also for its accessibility to motoring enthusiasts.

“After visiting the track recently and seeing the work that Steve and his associates have put into it, I can say that the rejuvenation that One Raceway has seen is nothing short of remarkable.

“This funding is in addition to $43 million for policing infrastructure, tens of millions of dollars for local roads, almost $2 million to complete upgrades to Moss Vale fire station and more than $10 million for critical infrastructure water and sanitation, just to name a few of the other essential services to be delivered through the 2024-25 budget.

“This funding delivers on a key commitment the Minns Labor Government made during the 2023 campaign, one that will help support Goulburn’s tourism industry long into the future.”

A Raceway owner, Steve Shelley, said:

“It’s a fantastic day for One Raceway as we embark on a bold new era for motorsport racing in NSW.

“I am delighted that the NSW Government has delivered on its election commitment by providing funding for our extensive noise mitigation works.

“Since purchasing this track, we have invested nearly $7 million to minimize noise disruption to the local community.

“These investments include modifications to the circuit structure and improvements to noise walls. This allows the circuit to be operated in both directions and further reduces the noise impact on our neighbours.”
