Bristol has been named the greenest city in England in a new study

Bristol has been named the greenest city in England, according to a new study. The studycreated by Millets, it ranked UK cities according to factors including the number of green spaces, annual emissions and the number of routes to find the greenest regions.

Out of a potential score of ten, Bristol achieved an environmental rating of 9.27. The study says Bristol has an average of 4.5 parks per 1,000 metres, the second highest of England’s top ten green cities, behind only Liverpool.

The study found that Bristol has an average of 12.5 EV chargers per 10 km², the lowest number of the top ten cities in England and well behind Coventry’s 135.7 chargers. Bristol has 13.6 walking routes per 10 km². Bristol’s 150 walking routes are the second highest in England, after Sheffield’s 186.

However, annual emissions per km² were just 6.9, the lowest of the top ten, resulting in the best green score in England. For comparison, the next lowest in the top ten cities for annual emissions was Brighton and Hove at 9.5, and Bristol’s figure is exactly half Liverpool’s.

The study says: “Bristol tops the list as England’s greenest destination with 9.27 out of 10. The green city is surrounded by the charming countryside of Somerset, Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds.

“Within a radius of 1,000 meters, the city has more than 4.5 parks and gardens. Crowned England’s first cycling city, Bristol supports sustainable travel with numerous bike hire shops and scenic cycling routes such as the popular Bristol to Bath Railway.

“In addition, Bristol has many nature reserves, from nationally important sites such as salt marshes to wildflower meadows and ancient woodlands. The town’s local nature reserves include Lamplighter’s Marsh and Manor Woods Valley.”
